App updates

How the app and the background service keep themselves up to date, and how to update by hand.

Diagnosly Personal has two parts, and both update themselves.

The app

The app checks for a new version when it starts, then every 15 minutes while it's open, and again when you bring the window back (at most once every 5 minutes).

  • When a new version is ready, a bar at the top offers Update now or Later. If the window is closed to the system tray, the tray icon's tooltip says an update is ready and its menu shows Update to the new version number. Choosing that brings the window back.
  • A new version installs, then the app reopens.
  • Updates are digitally signed and checked before they install. A download that doesn't match is rejected.
  • If your version is too old to be supported any more, the app shows Update required and you need to update before you can carry on.

Settings

Under Settings, This app, Updates shows your status ("You're up to date. Checked 5 min ago." or "Version X is ready to install.") and a button: Check now or Update now.

Install updates automatically is off by default, so nothing installs unless you choose it. Switch it on and a new version installs by itself as soon as no diagnosis is running, then the app reopens. With it off, you choose when to update.

If an automatic install doesn't finish, Diagnosly won't try it again on its own for a day, so a failing update can't trap your app in a loop. The status says so and Update now tries again.

Signing in again after an update

Sign-in used to end about an hour after you signed in. It now stays active, so the app keeps you signed in between uses. Because of that change, the first time you update from an older version you'll be asked to sign in once more. After that you stay signed in, even if your connection drops for a while (the app shows Can't reach Diagnosly and reconnects by itself). Signing out or resetting your password ends it.

The background service

The service that investigates your PC updates itself quietly in the background. It downloads a newer version, checks that the download is genuine, and swaps it in. You don't need to do anything.

The web dashboard shows which service version your connected PC is running.

If an update won't install

  • Choose Update now in Settings. A small Diagnosly Setup window shows the progress, Windows asks for permission once, and the app reopens by itself.
  • If that fails, download the latest installer from the Get started page and run it over the top. Your account, credits and history are kept online with your account, so they stay as they were.
  • Very early versions (0.3.1 and 0.3.2) can't update themselves. If you have one, install the latest by hand once. After that updates are automatic.

Your version

The version number is at the bottom of Settings and in the account menu.
